United We Fall
United We Fall seemed almost channeled to me in the aftermath of September 11th. I was struck by the similarities and also the differences of the people who died in the Trade Center --- both in who they were and how they died. I used different pulps and pigments to represent the differences, yet made all the figures of the same shape. For me, the piece represents how even in unity of purpose and experience, and even in large numbers – maybe especially in these things – we can fall anyway – tumbling, burnt, and still together. The base of the piece of course represents a tower much like the tall buildings of the World Trade Center.
