Description:
“Unaccompanied” speaks to the harrowing reality that children are being sent out alone by desperate parents to seek the possibility of a safer, better future. The boat in the piece is flimsy, made of paper. Dangers abound inside and outside the vessel. Mistress Mary represents the parents, pouring water to lift their boat and hasten their journey. Bo-peep represents the ravaged countries who have lost their sheep, their future citizens. The girl at the end can read as welcoming and embracing the displaced with open arms or as imposing & intimidating, waving the boat away, reflecting the unpredictability of which it will be.
